Love Bugs opens at 5 a.m. on weekdays, so arriving early is key if you want first dibs on the full selection. When I visited on a Sunday morning around 9 a.m., the pastry case was already moving fast, and the bakery buzzed with kids’ laughter and the oohs and ahhs of customers admiring the remaining treats.

Location & Atmosphere

Step inside and you’re instantly transported back to childhood. Red and black polka-dot décor, love-themed signage, and playful ladybug illustrations create a whimsical, nostalgic vibe that feels right at home in this West Melbourne bakery. There’s even a Little Love Bugs corner just for kids, complete with a chalkboard and a cozy space to read, draw, and let their imaginations run wild. Before diving into the donuts, I sampled two of Love Bugs’ breakfast sandwiches, and they absolutely deserve the spotlight.

Hog Heaven

First up is the Hog Heaven: a toasted bagel stacked with a quarter-pound sausage patty, two slices of bacon, two slices of ham, and melted American cheese. Most of Love Bugs’ bagels are made in-house, and the garlic bagel I chose was outstanding—fluffy yet dense, with bold garlic flavor that paired perfectly with the meat and melty cheese. It’s filling and incredibly satisfying, especially for meat lovers.

The Vermont

Next is what Ryan calls a “napkin sandwich”: the Vermont. This unique creation features sausage, egg, and cheese sandwiched between a maple ring donut with maple glaze. The donut is sliced and flipped so the glazed exterior melts right into the sandwich. It’s messy and sticky, but totally worth it. The sweet maple glaze and savory sausage create a flavor-packed bite that feels indulgent without being overwhelming.

Love Bugs offers four main donut categories—regular, filled, specialty, and premium. After sampling across all four, these are my Top 5 Must-Try Donuts.

Red Velvet Donut

The Red Velvet is a classic cake donut topped with a generous swirl of cream cheese frosting and finished with red velvet cake crumbs. It’s dense, moist, and not overly sweet, perfectly balanced by the tangy frosting.

Apple Filled Donut

The Apple Filled donut is another standout. Love Bugs does not skimp on filling. Every bite delivers tender apple pieces in a gooey, apple-pie-style filling. Paired with an airy yeast donut and coated in cinnamon sugar, this one is an easy 10/10.

PB&J Donut

For a playful twist on a childhood classic, the PB&J donut shines. This hefty yeast donut is filled with strawberry jelly and topped with a creamy peanut butter frosting that’s dangerously addictive. With its generous filling, it’s a jelly lover’s dream.

Mounds Bar Donut

Another cake donut earns a spot in the Top 5: a chocolate cake donut dipped in vanilla icing and topped with coconut flakes. Think of a Mounds bar transformed into donut form. It’s rich, chocolatey, and perfectly toasty.

Cronut Donut

Ever heard of a Cronut? This hybrid pastry combines the flaky, buttery layers of a croissant with the fried, glazed goodness of a donut. First popularized by Dominique Ansel in 2013, Love Bugs’ version is square-shaped, glazed, and finished with a chocolate drizzle. I said this list was in no particular order, but this one might just be my favorite. The buttery layers paired with the classic glaze make it an absolute must-try.

Why Love Bug’s is Worth a Visit
