Taste of the Tropics Restaurant Review – Palm Bay, FL

Tucked into a quiet stretch of Palm Bay Rd NE, this cozy spot is easy to miss but well worth finding. Just a few minutes from Dixie Highway NE, look for the light blue building with a matching awning—modest on the outside, but bursting with flavor and warmth once you step inside. That’s where Lena, a Guyanese native from New York, has brought her vision to life: Taste of the Tropics, a restaurant serving soulful Caribbean cuisine.

Inside, the rhythmic pulse of Caribbean music sets the tone for a laid-back and authentic dining experience. The space is inviting and unfussy, allowing the food to take center stage. Lena’s passion for her roots and culinary traditions shines in every detail, from the vibrant atmosphere to the home-style dishes coming out of the kitchen.
I started my meal with Conch Fritters, a Caribbean classic I hadn’t tried before. They arrived beautifully presented on a piece of wood and garnished with a playful pink umbrella. These golden bites of minced conch meat, mixed with herbs and spices, were fried to crisp perfection. Each bite was tender and aromatic, with a slightly briny flavor that paired beautifully with the sweet and tangy dipping sauce. I found myself going back for extra sauce with every bite.
The Curry Goat followed, slightly spicy with that unmistakable earthy flavor that curry lovers crave. The goat was tender and deeply seasoned, and while it packed a gentle kick, the heat never overwhelmed the complexity of the dish. Paired with warm Roti, it made for a deeply satisfying bite. The Roti itself was soft and stretchy, served warm with a spiced pea filling that added richness to every mouthful. Pulling it apart and scooping up the curry just felt right.
The highlight of my lunch was the Oxtail, a meal that speaks to patience. Braised slowly in traditional Jamaican herbs and spices, the Oxtail was rich, buttery, and falling-off-the-bone tender. It came plated with sweet fried plantains, a hearty scoop of rice and beans, and sautéed cabbage and carrots. The balance of savory, sweet, and spice on that plate made it one of the standouts of the afternoon—and an example of the kind of cooking that sticks with you long after the meal is over.
While Caribbean staples are the heart of the menu, Lena has included American favorites like BBQ Chicken and New York Strip Steak—each dish made with that Taste of the Tropics signature flavor.
Beyond the food, Taste of the Tropics offers an event space that can host up to 60 guests—a perfect space for birthdays, anniversaries, or any celebration that calls for good food and even better vibes. There’s also outdoor seating available, ideal for beautiful summer days when you crave a cold drink and a meal in the sunshine with loved ones.
Lena has created a space where culture and community come together. Her New York roots and Guyanese heritage shine through every dish. Since opening Taste of the Tropics just six months ago in a space that once housed another restaurant, she’s been working to bring in new faces and share her fresh, soulful take on island comfort food.
So, if you’re in Palm Bay and craving a real taste of the Caribbean, step inside, let the music move you, and enjoy a meal that feeds more than your appetite—it feeds your soul.
