Top Ice Cream Shops in Indian River County

With summer in full swing here in Florida, there is no better way to cool off than with an ice cream treat! Having spent most of my life in the Midwest, we would only look forward to three of the five seasons. What’s the fifth season you ask? In addition to the normal changing of the seasons, there was one more that only northerners will understand, and that is the “Ice Cream” season. If you have lived in the south your entire life, you may be asking yourself what that is. As winter sets in, most of the ice cream shops close due to decreased demand. We would always count the days until “season” kicked in, usually the first part of March when we could get that first ice cream cone or sundae of the season. Living in Florida we don’t experience the “ice cream” season, so thankfully we get to enjoy it year-round.

Now let’s dive right in and see all the amazing ice cream treats I tasted over the past few weeks while creating this article!

Cravings is hard to miss when cruising on Ocean Drive, with its red awnings and central location, they are right in the middle of everything. They do have a large covered outdoor patio to keep you dry from stray afternoon showers and a few tables inside if you prefer a cooler place to sit. When most people think ice cream on Vero’s oceanside, Cravings is usually at the top of their list since they have been around the longest and have one of the largest varieties of flavors to choose from. These two delectable items I got to try during my visit were just so darned tasty, I can’t stop thinking about them! With a huge menu that includes baked goods, sandwiches, salads, house made granola, coffee, tea, and of course ice cream, there is something on their menu to satisfy just about everyone!

If you are looking for a “Super Premium” experience, then look no further than Pop’s Ice Cream in Sebastian, FL! They are located at the corner of Roseland Rd and US Hwy 1 in the Roseland Plaza (in the corner) and was founded in 2015 and under new management since 2019. The new owner is a Desert Storm war veteran and offers discounts to all first responders and veterans. All of their ice cream is made in-house and contains 16% butter fat with a little overrun. The higher butter fat content makes the ice cream richer and creamier than regular ice cream. It also makes it softer when served and is not as “hard packed” as its lower butter fat counterpart. With alcoholic-infused, sugar-free, gluten-free, and vegan options, I’m sure you will find a treat here to please the entire family!

If you have yet to discover the deliciousness that is Sweet Kiss Ice Cream, then you are in for a special treat!  Owner, Livia Sorger opened in April of 2015 and has been going strong ever since.  While the business name says ice cream, what they are making here is Gelato.  It’s an Italian-style “ice cream” and is smoother and creamier than traditional ice cream.  It contains 50% less air, and less fat, and is made with whole milk instead of cream.  All the gelato here is made in-house with organic milk and quite a few products are shipped in from Italy for a truly authentic experience. With the recent addition of paninis and freshly made crepes, you now have more dining options to choose from.

Yami’s Ice Cream has been in business now for over 13 years and actually opened its first location on 14th Ave in Vero Beach. In 2012 they decided to relocate to Fellsmere. Yami’s originally opened as a convenience store, however, the popularity of their ice cream dictated their direction and now they focus solely on ice cream products. One thing that differentiates them from other ice cream shops is the ice cream bars. They are made in-house and there are over 45 different flavors available, with many of them being dairy-free.

  1. I’ve been to all of these ice cream shops and I agree, they are all excellent , but my favorite shop is not here. I love Paradise Ice Cream shop on US 1 in Sebastian. It’s in the same plaza with Italian Cousin and Sandwich shack. I’ve taken my grandson to all and his favorite is also Paradise. You should try it. Great ice cream, nice people, seating inside and out, view of the Indian River.
