Even though fall has arrived for most of the country, summer is still in full swing here in Florida, and there is no better way to cool off than with a frozen custard treat from Abbott’s! So what’s the difference between ice cream and frozen custard? Ice cream is made with milk & cream, while frozen custard is made from milk, cream, and egg yolks, which gives it a richer flavor. The machine used to make ice cream churns air into it to make it lighter. Frozen custard is produced in a machine that barely incorporates air into it, which means it’s quite a bit more dense.

Abbott’s first got started by a young entrepreneur named Arthur Abbott back in the early 1900’s. He was traveling the eastern seaboard with the summer carnivals, entertaining during the day, and perfecting his recipe for his frozen custard at night. Eventually he found his way to Rochester, NY where he opened his first frozen custard stand across the street from Charlotte Beach on the shores of Lake Ontario which was home to an amusement park. As word spread of Arthur’s frozen treat, people would line up from morning until night, and Abbott’s Frozen Custard was born!

Abbott’s has been in Vero Beach for the past 15 years and is one of our favorite places to get a frozen treat! All of their custard is made in house daily, and hand scooped for each customer. While each scoop may look a bit haphazard, their employees go through weeks of training to learn this method. The messy, or as I call it, a modern art masterpiece, scoop is done that way on purpose and is part of the Abbott’s experience. With new management as of January 2021, newly expanded hours and a drive-thru for customer convenience, you definitely need to stop by and rediscover everything that Abbott’s has to offer!

Now let’s dive right in and see what this place has to offer and what I had to eat!
