Best Places to Get a Cocktail in Indian River County – Part 1

I’ve never been a person to just stop by a bar and have a drink, unless food was involved, so I usually tend to just dine at restaurants with a bar that also serves cocktails. To my surprise, 3 of the 4 places I visited had light snacks all the way up to a full-service restaurant, so this definitely opens up a few new options when I decide to go out. I’ve also only been to one of the places featured in this article before (Capt. Hirams), so I was excited to enjoy a new experience at a few places I’ve never been to before. My personal preference has always been to lean towards a sweeter cocktail with less “alcohol” flavor which means they go down easy, and that can be very dangerous, especially with me since I don’t have a high tolerance. Needless to say, I was feeling pretty good after doing my “research” for this article!

For the month of September, they partnered with United Against Poverty of Indian River County, a very worthy organization that does great work in our community! When it comes to drinks around Vero, I’ve heard the rumors about how legendary the Bloody Mary’s are at Filthy’s, so I had to stop by and see for myself. You guys weren’t lying, this is one impressive drink! I stopped by one afternoon and met with one of the owners, Angela Novak and she crafted the drink you see above. With so many choices of garnishes, how does one choose? In this case I didn’t have to, because she loaded up this bad boy with just about everything they have to offer! With a super fun party atmosphere, a menu that includes items from soft pretzels to pizza, open till 2am most nights, this place should definitely be on your list!

Owners, John & Gina Scharr first opened Sol Mar back in February 2020, exactly 3 weeks before the world shutdown. You would think this would be a death sentence for any new small business, but Gina said it was actually a blessing in disguise. This allowed them time to create the perfect space they’ve always envisioned and to bring the Big City vibe to Vero that they both love so much! Gina said many of her inspirations came from hotel lobby bars from all around the world. Having a beach day and need a cold one? They welcome everyone, from sandy feet beach goers during the day, to semi-formal attire in the evenings. Halloween decorations are up now and you gotta stop by and try a few of their new specialty cocktails they created just for the occasion, they are Spooktacular!

The Bayou – Vero Beach, FL

Front Entrance
The Bar
Meat & Cheese Plate

Owners Mark & Bonnie, decided to move to Vero from the Winter Park area in the Orlando area to be closer to their grandkids. Mark has been in the bar business for well over 30 years and is also a contractor by trade. Just about everything you see in the bar was reclaimed or were items he has collected over the years and stored in his warehouse. He custom built the bar, the tables, and even the chairs have a cool story! They date back to the early 1990’s and came from Holiday Inn’s when they had bars in the lobby. The Louisiana / New Orleans theme is a tribute to his wife who is from that area. With light bites to eat and one of the largest beer menus in Vero, we highly suggest you stop by and grab yourself a cold one!
