Ocean Grill Restaurant Review – Vero Beach, FL

Nestled on a sandy dune with a commanding view of the Atlantic Ocean in Vero Beach, the Ocean Grill is more than just a restaurant; it’s a living testament to history. This cherished establishment, constructed in 1941 by the visionary Waldo Sexton, is steeped in a rich and storied past. From its pecky cypress and mahogany furnishings to wrought iron and Spanish antiques, Waldo’s dedication to authenticity is apparent throughout. Dining at Ocean Grill feels like a step back in time, and the main dining room, originally an open-air patio, offers breathtaking ocean views.

The restaurant’s resilience has been tested over the years, having served as an officers’ club during World War II, hosted local legends, and even operated under the mysterious watch of “Chicago gangsters.” It has weathered hurricanes and witnessed history while standing tall. Today, this enduring legacy continues under the stewardship of the Replogle family, promising a dining experience that seamlessly blends the past and the present.

As you cross the threshold into Ocean Grill, you’re not just dining; you’re immersing yourself in a coastal saga that spans decades. From its humble beginnings to its enduring charm, this restaurant has a unique story to share with each visit. Whether you’re savoring a romantic evening, or enjoying a meal with an unparalleled view, Ocean Grill’s history and authenticity make it a destination like no other. The restaurant’s unwavering commitment to quality, combined with its picturesque location, ensures that every visit is a memorable journey through time.

Now let’s dive right in and see what this place has to offer and what I had to eat!

Oysters Rockefeller as prepared by the Ocean Grill in Vero Beach Florida

Our Ocean Grill journey began with the classic dish, Oysters Rockefeller, a delightful menu special. As a non-oyster aficionado, I was pleasantly surprised by these broiled half-shell oysters, tender and bursting with flavor, adorned with a rich blend of butter, herbs, and breadcrumbs, creating a harmonious accompaniment to their natural brininess. The addition of zesty lemon wedges provided the required acid needed, with a pop of freshness.

Whole stuffed florida lobster as prepared by the Ocean Grill in Vero Beach Florida

Our culinary adventure continued with another special of the evening, a masterpiece that truly stole the spotlight—the Stuffed Florida Lobster. This exquisite creation featured a whole fresh Florida lobster, its shell split open with the tail elegantly fluffed atop, and the body was filled with their lunchtime deviled crab stuffing mix. Drawn butter was served alongside, and we also enjoyed a side of asparagus. The lobster tail was cooked perfectly, tender, and sweet. The crab stuffing had tons of crab meat and very little filling and was broiled until golden brown. An exceptional dish, beautifully presented, and exactly what we expect when dining at the Ocean Grill!

As our evening drew to a close, we were reminded that dessert is a must, especially when Ocean Grill boasts an exceptional selection of house-made sweet treats. From the array, we chose the Almond Praline Basket, a delightful creation. This dessert masterpiece featured a delicate almond praline basket cradling creamy vanilla Häagen-Dazs ice cream and crowned with luscious raspberry sorbet. A dollop of whipped cream and a scattering of fresh berries completed this sweet symphony. It was a perfect ending to a memorable meal, showcasing Ocean Grill’s commitment to culinary excellence in every course.
