El Rey Mexican Restaurant Review in Vero Beach, Florida

Buen Provecho! (Enjoy your meal!) June 2022 was a good month for the foodie scene in Vero Beach. A very good month, indeed, as Pedro Cruz, from the South of Mexico and with over 25 years of experience, opened a little gem called El Rey. If your experience with Mexican restaurants has been that you’re in for a heavy, over spiced meal, please give El Rey a try. What you’ll find is an elevated experience where the depth of flavor, both savory and earthy flavors, lightness from fresh herbs, well-prepared veggies, and the right balance of citrus will delight you! Que’ Rico! (Delicious!)

When I arrived at El Rey, Lupita greeted me with a beautiful smile. She also makes a mean Strawberry Margarita and Moscow mule (Mexican style-made with Rum.) Then I met Pedro and learned that offering handcrafted cocktails with natural fruit and freshly squeezed lime juice is a big part of the vision that he had when opening El Rey. I told him I’ve been a regular since El Rey opened. The spinach enchiladas platter is one of my favorites when cutting back on meat, and the Fajitas, which consistently come out steaming hot like a locomotive, really can’t be beat.

Mojarra a la Diabla – This whole fish dish features mojarra (fish) and camarón (shrimp) bathed in a flavor-packed spicy diablo sauce. My first time trying a “whole fish” dish, I was pleased with the combination of the crisp coating and the light and tender fish topped with diablo sauce was packed with flavor.

El Rey Sampler – A combination of Cheese Quesadilla, Chicken Flauta, Beef Nachos, and Bean Dip served with Lettuce, Shredded Cheese, jalapeños & Pico de Gallo, a great choice for sharing with the table if the complimentary chips and salsa aren’t enough! The sampler provides a good variety and each item was crisp and full of flavor.

California Burrito - The generous portion is perfect for a large appetite (or extra for lunch the next day). The Burrito was generously filled with carne asada meat, cheese, rice, pico de gallo, beans and provided the expected explosion of flavors desired in this traditional dish at El Rey Mexican restaurant in vero beach florida

Campechana (Left) / Ceviche Tropical (Right) – The first dish featured Fresh Shrimp and Octopus marinated in lime juice, cocktail sauce, pico de gallo, cucumber, and avocado. The second dish featured fresh shrimp marinated in lime juice, pico de gallo, cucumber, mango & avocado. While both were ceviche-style dishes, they each provided their own excellent flavor given subtle differences in ingredients.

Combo Fajitas with a side of rice, beans, lettuce, sour cream, and pick de gallo at El Rey Mexican restaurant in vero beach florida

Combo Fajitas – A Mexican restaurant can serve a lot of dishes, but one that must be done right is fajitas, and these did not disappoint. They were served traditionally, meaning everyone in the restaurant can smell and hear them as they make their way to the table! There was just the right char from the skillet, yet tender to eat.

Trio Molcajete - A molcajete is a stone tool, the Mexican version of a mortar and pestle, used for grinding various foods. Steak, chicken, and shrimp cooked with bell pepper, onion, tomato, chorizo, queso, and jalapeño at El Rey Mexican restaurant in vero beach florida.
